This winter was tough. The relentless, bitter cold days. The endless piles of snow. Well, maybe it wasn't that bad, but it certainly felt like it. And I felt out of balance. Even though I was during yoga regularly and going to the gym, all the time spent indoors made me feel off. It was too easy to spend days, and nights, working. Once the city finally thawed -- after what felt like months being stuck indoors -- I promised myself I would change that. I would spend more time outside; I would rediscover all of the things I used to love to do: camping, hiking, going to the beach and simply spending time in nature.
But without a car, it can be challenging accessing nature. So, at the recommendation of a friend, I signed up for a surf lesson at Rockaway Beach with Locals Surf School. I've been surfing every week, and it's not only satisfied my craving for nature, but also helped me to achieve a more balanced life. Most lessons are in the morning and there is no better way to begin the day than with a swim in the ocean and a vigorous workout. The lessons take place a train ride away at Beach 67th Street out at Rockaway Beach -- considered a beginner's surfing beach -- where the waves are managable and offer great conditions for those just starting out.
Hope to see you at the beach!
