Many of us assume that if a product is for sale in a supermarket or drugstore, it's safe. Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration does not require companies to test cosmetics products for safety, not does it even review or approve the vast majority of products or ingredients before they go on the market. EWG's Skin Deep Database notes that "cosmetics companies may use any ingredient or raw material in their products without government review or approval," including bithionol, Chlorofluorcarbon propellants, vinyl chloride and nearly 1,000 other ingredients that the European Union has banned.
Unfortunately, that means the onus is on consumers to do their research. Visit EWG.org's Skin Deep Cosmetic Database to determine if the cosmetics in your make-up bag are safe. Also, Beauty Counter offer a handy, downloadable "Always With You Never List" to help navigate a routine trip to Sephora or Target.
